The fields of education and human behavior have long recognized the complex nature of student behavior and its relationship to the child’s learning environment Understanding this relationship and the presence of these factors helps educators and clinicians become more effective in their analysis and development of strategies to respond to behaviors which negatively impact student success. By examining the environment\, staff can use this knowledge to manipulate and alter the conditions which serve as triggers to the challenging behaviors thereby improving the learning environment for struggling learners and improving a positive classroom environment for all. When thinking about changing student behavior\, focus should be placed on how adults are teaching and supporting the student both as part of a group and as an individual. Multiple opportunities to access\, engage and respond to academic tasks help to decrease feelings of frustration\, increase access to content and prompt academic engagement while creating a positive learning environment. Strategies presented will highlight curricular adaptations as to WHAT is taught\, instructional adaptations as to HOW content is taught and how learning is demonstrated and ecological adaptions which relate to where\, when and with whom instruction and learning takes place. Strategies presented will also form the basis for academic and behavioral accommodations and modifications as well as specially designed instruction as part of a well developed IEP. Research has suggested that teachers and other school personnel often have received inadequate training in the understanding and management of problematic student behavior. This circumstance has often made both teachers and clinicians alike feel helpless in the development of successful responses to these behaviors. It is therefore important for educators to take advantage of the use of researched based behavioral science approaches. Figuring out the reasons behind a behavior is critical for the development of an appropriate response or intervention. By understanding that behavior is a form of student communication that is purposeful\, interactive\, predictable\, and learned through the visual representation of a behavior chain or pathway\, teachers and clinicians can become better equipped with the skills necessary to manage behavior effectively and efficiently. In this session\, participants will learn how to independently develop behavior interventions through a process that determines why a student engages in behaviors that impede learning and that are related to the classroom environment. Thinking about the circumstances and factors surrounding a behavior in a systematic manner will help teachers set up and manage their classrooms in a proactive and positive way. This evidence-based framework emphasizes positive\, proactive and preventive strategies that address behavioral and school discipline problems by teaching\, modeling and recognizing positive\, appropriate behavior in schools. PBIS is not a curriculum\, program\, or single practice\, but is a systems framework that guides the selection and implementation of evidence-based practices for improving behavioral and social-emotional outcomes for all students while increasing opportunities for academic engagement and improved performance. Coursework covers Tiers 1\, 2 and 3 over multiple sessions. Audience: School teams and personnel in positions to develop systems change within their school and district. On campus coaching\, technical assistance and professional development available. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. Effective classroom managers build strong relationships with students\, communicate effectively\, and adapt their strategies to meet individual needs. Participants will learn eight research based strategies that increase instructional time\, minimize problematic behavior and increase student engagement thereby setting students up for academic\, social and behavioral success. These practices include: -understanding student behavior\, -providing quality instruction\, -teaching rules\, -expectations\, -routines and procedures\, -practicing precorrection\, -active supervision and -implementing strategies for both positive and negative responses.
